This ill conceived policy is creating an unfortunate discord in this entire community.
As a Kirkwood parent, there are so many questions that I have regarding educational, environmental, recreational, social and emotioal issues, that I can't in good conscience support the current policy.
Rationale (Short Version): The costs of the planned implementation of the diversity policy are all too obvious. The benefits to the district are uncertain, and involve a leap of faith.
Coralville Central is and has been for a while now exactly where "FRL numbers" should be. Yes, we could use some help, but every family that is there WANTS to stay there
The goal of a more equal distribution of students on a socio-economic basis is laudable, but to mandate fixed percentages by an absolute date is proving to be unworkable.
I have heard no evidence that the massive redistricting the board has planned based on the 'diversity policy' will impact our community in a positive way.
The implementation of the DP is expensive and disruptive. It is a bussing plan that destroys whole neighborhoods and support networks of whole schools. It needs to stop.
Uprooting children from the friends, teachers, and school they know will be traumatic
I believe the ICCSD and its superintendent can do much better than the (impossible) plan proposed for diversity in our schools.
Overall, the redistricting process needs to be administered in a transparent, objective manner in which trade-offs are clearly presented.
Stop the madness of moving our kids.
Plan in advance and do not disrupt our lives with these over-ambitious, disruptive, myopic plans.
The implementation of this policy disregards the long terms plans that families work toward in having their children in a stable environment for their education.
Don't impose on a few schools the City's fault of a bad housing plan. Stop this. While we wait for the new elementary build affordable housing close to LOW FRL schools.
Busing kids to achieve diversity is only going to create other issues. Need to focus on less disruptive ways to achieve balance. FRL numbers really don't represent a fair way to measure issue.
If we truly are committed to our children's education, we should spend the limited resources and fund educating them instead of busing them around.
Trying to implement a dysfunctional policy which has incorrect foundation, only creates more dysfunction.
Families focus on stability of the children. We had boundary changes to move more families before only to find it was not a good fit then re did the boundary changes again. How is that fair to the children?
